Perinatal Partners
Perinatal Partners connects medical students who want to learn more about the field of obstetrics/gynecology with patients who benefit most from additional support throughout their pregnancy. Patients may opt-in to be partnered with a medical student who can accompany the patient to medical appointments at LUHS-affiliated locations, provide maternal health navigation, connect patients to community-based pregnancy resources, and answer basic non-medical questions about the patient experience. Perinatal Partners will collaborate with neonatology, obstetrics and gynecology to provide support to patients along the continuum of their pregnancy journey. This has been established in an effort to fight maternal/fetal health disparities experienced by patients in the Chicago area. This student org has two primary aims:
(1) Perinatal Health Navigation: Students may accompany under-resourced patients to pregnancy care appointments and provide basic maternal health navigation. Students may also be partnered with caregivers, who are lacking in social and practical support, whose infants are in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU).
(2) Comprehensive Education: Perinatal Partners aims to develop a comprehensive resource guide to pregnancy-related resources in the Chicago area. In addition, we aim to host seminars/workshops to enhance understanding of pregnancy and maternal/fetal health.
